From a local perspective, the Western Districts came a valiant second to the Northern New England Team in the A Grade Masters over 40's , and Gulgong's own Brian Johnson was awarded Best number 2.
However it was the younger talent that really shone through over the weekend and clearly goes to show that the effort that our local clubs put into nurturing, encouraging and coaching our younger players really pays off. In the A Grade u21 Mixed, Western Districts beat Southern Highlands in the final to take the winners title and Gulgong Player Teagan Hackney took out the Best Number 1 award.
Following that came a hat-trick of positional awards with Western Districts winning not only the B Grade Open, but also Best 1, 2 and 3 players in the grade, including Jack Foran (2) and Dan Trengove (3) representing Gulgong Polocrosse Club.
Similar success was had in the B Grade Sub Junior Open with Western Districts once again taking not only first place against Hunter Valley, but also cleaning up all three Best Position awards.
Finally, despite not making it to the final, young Western Districts Number 1 player Kate Turnbull caught the judges eye to beat everyone else to the Best Number 1 spot in the A Grade Junior Mixed.
The weather was kind and the weekend was a huge success despite being forced to relocate to Dunedoo due to the wet ground at Gulgong making play unsafe. The crowds turned out in force to support their local players and it is clear that, if the results from this weekend are anything to go on, the Western Districts Zone has a very long and successful future ahead of it with so many talented young players in its fold. Once again a huge thank you to all our sponsors, the weekend would not have been possible without your tremendous generosity and support.
