Annual Carnival August 27th & 28th 2011

It hardly seems possible that a whole year has passed since Gulgong Polocrosse Club hosted the NSW Zone Championships – despite having to relocate to Dunedoo it was a huge success and our own players performed extremely well. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind to us this year and the annual Club Carnival is set to take place over the weekend of 27th – 28th August 2011. We will be expecting at least 250 players to participate in the tournament with grades ranging from A Grade right down to sub-junior. The Club itself will be fielding teams across all the grades, and playing on home turf will give players a steely determination to see that the trophies are kept firmly in our cabinet!!

So, with more than a few local faces out on the field, there’s no excuse not to come down and give them some support as they battle it out in. For anyone unfamiliar with the game of Polocrosse, it is a very relaxed affair – no need for hats and high heels here!! Dress warmly and comfortably as play starts at 8am on both days and then games are held almost continuously throughout the day for nonstop action! There is no entrance fee to the event but parking is limited. Please note that NO DOGS are allowed anywhere within the grounds. The club canteen will be offering hot and cold food and drinks throughout the day and a number of raffles and prizes will be up for grabs over the weekend. There will also be some trade stands to browse in between games and a chance to chat with local players if you fancy coming and having a go yourself one weekend!

Of course NONE of this would be possible if it were not for the incredibly generosity of our sponsors. Coming from many different areas of our local community they have not hesitated in offering sponsorship, goods, services and prizes to enable us to get the whole thing off the ground and for that we THANK YOU!!!!!!! We are still actively seeking sponsors for this year’s carnival - with players travelling from all over the state, it is a great way for local businesses to promote their goods and services. There are numerous sponsorship packages available and more information can be found at our website www.gulgongpolocrosseclub.webs.com or contact Club Secretary Jackie O’Hare on 0417 061882 / 63733570 / jackie@bordernet.com.au

Congratulations to the 10 players whom made the trek up to Galloping Gully last weekend to campaign for our club. With a full B grade team entered and at couple of St George wanderes helping us field a team in C grade mixed, the recent rain did nothing to dampen our spirits, and the sun shone for a fabulous weekend of Polocrosse. Bgrade runners up and CGrade mixed winners, alongside a couple of positional awards put a smile on everyones face WELL DONE ALL:D

Zone Champs Results

From a local perspective, the Western Districts came a valiant second to the Northern New England Team in the A Grade Masters over 40's , and Gulgong's own Brian Johnson was awarded Best number 2.

However it was the younger talent that really shone through over the weekend and clearly goes to show that the effort that our local clubs put into nurturing, encouraging and coaching our younger players really pays off. In the A Grade u21 Mixed, Western Districts beat Southern Highlands in the final to take the winners title and Gulgong Player Teagan Hackney took out the Best Number 1 award.

Following that came a hat-trick of positional awards with Western Districts winning not only the B Grade Open, but also Best 1, 2 and 3 players in the grade, including Jack Foran (2) and Dan Trengove (3) representing Gulgong Polocrosse Club.

Similar success was had in the B Grade Sub Junior Open with Western Districts once again taking not only first place against Hunter Valley, but also cleaning up all three Best Position awards.

Finally, despite not making it to the final, young Western Districts Number 1 player Kate Turnbull caught the judges eye to beat everyone else to the Best Number 1 spot in the A Grade Junior Mixed.

The weather was kind and the weekend was a huge success despite being forced to relocate to Dunedoo due to the wet ground at Gulgong making play unsafe. The crowds turned out in force to support their local players and it is clear that, if the results from this weekend are anything to go on, the Western Districts Zone has a very long and successful future ahead of it with so many talented young players in its fold. Once again a huge thank you to all our sponsors, the weekend would not have been possible without your tremendous generosity and support.

For full results of all grades please se the link in the Zone Champs 2010 page
